How can the mention of a prophet named "Ahmad" by Jesus (peace be upon him) be reconciled with the the coming of a prophet named "Muhammad"?
The Messiah, peace be upon him, gave tidings of a messenger named Ahmad, who is our Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. The Prophet said: "I have five names: I am Muhammad, and Ahmad." The word "name" is applied to the named, to fame for goodness, and to a proper noun for a specific entity.
So, "Ahmad" could either mean the named, or be a proper noun for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, or signify fame. The name "Ahmad" indicates that its bearer is described by the strongest qualities for which one is praised, and that his reputation and remembrance across generations are described as the most intensely praiseworthy remembrance. Moreover, "Ahmad" is a proper noun that is synonymous with "Muhammad" in meaning, as both indicate one who is greatly praised.
