These are customs of the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era of ignorance) and reprehensible innovations that must be abandoned and whose reprehensibility must be made clear. They include:

1. Recitation [of Qur’an] at the grave: This is impermissible. The Salaf (pious predecessors) did not do it. Rather, the recitation of Surat Ya-Sin is only mentioned in relation to the dying person before the soul departs. 2. Condolence (Ta'ziyah): This is a Sunnah (prophetic tradition) and is offered to the deceased's family wherever they may be. There is no harm in them gathering so that those offering condolences may visit them. However, they should not gather for eating, and it is disliked for them to prepare food for people. 3. Collecting money: There is no need for this unless the deceased's family is poor and eligible for Zakat (charity). 4. Slaughtering animals (for the deceased): This is impermissible, whether from the deceased's wealth or otherwise, unless food is prepared for the deceased's family according to their needs. 5. Collecting pebbles, performing Dhikr (remembrance of Allah) while collecting them, and placing them on the grave: This is a reprehensible innovation. 6. Raising the voice in wailing and lamenting, slapping cheeks, and enumerating the deceased's virtues: This is an innovation from the actions of Jahiliyyah. "He is not one of us who slaps his cheeks, tears his garment, and calls with the calls of Jahiliyyah." 7. Wearing black as a sign of mourning for the deceased: This is an innovation. Wives of the deceased must avoid wearing extravagant clothes, adornment, jewelry, and perfume during the mourning period. 8. Abandoning usual work and activities during the mourning period: This is an innovation. The mourning woman is allowed to prepare food, sweep the house, and wash dishes and clothes.
