Is the use of mouthwash that contains alcohol permissible in Islam?

The claim that there is alcohol in mouthwash or oral rinse is a contention that does not entail a ruling until its presence is proven. Alcohol is included in the composition of many medicines and pharmaceutical preparations as a solvent or preservative. The preponderant opinion is that the matter depends on the quantity of alcohol. If its percentage in a compound is such that it would intoxicate if a large amount of it were consumed, then its sale, purchase, and use, whether little or much, are forbidden. However, if its percentage is small such that it does not intoxicate its user, and it leaves no color, taste, smell, or intoxicating effect if a large amount of it is consumed, then it is not forbidden, and its use, sale, and purchase are permissible.
