What is the meaning of understanding from Allah and His Messenger, and what is the meaning of levels of understanding and the object of understanding?

Understanding is the knowledge and recognition of something. What is meant by understanding from Allah and His Messenger is the knowledge of the meanings of their words. As for fiqh (jurisprudence), it is more specific than understanding, and it means understanding the speaker's intent from his words. People vary in their levels of understanding; some grasp from a text what others do not, and this is a disparity that none but Allah can enumerate. As for "the 'manaat' (bases/hinges) of understanding," this term has not been clearly used, but manaat is that upon which something is hinged. Thus, correct understanding depends on proficiency in the religious sciences and instrumental sciences (such as language and the principles of fiqh), and above all, the servant's supplication to his Lord to grant him understanding.
