Is a girl considered sinful if she insists on marrying a righteous young man whom her father rejected due to his "clear tribal tendency" and his insistence on marrying her to someone less religious, knowing that the father swore he would not be pleased with her if she agreed?

The woman's guardian should marry her to a righteous, compatible man, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If someone whose religiosity and character you approve proposes to you, then marry him. If you do not do so, there will be tribulation on earth and widespread corruption." It is not permissible for the guardian to prevent his ward from marrying a compatible man whom she has accepted, as Allah Almighty says: "So do not prevent them from marrying their [former] husbands if they agree among themselves on an acceptable basis."

If the guardian's obstruction is proven, the guardianship transfers to the next of kin among the male agnates. If all of them refuse, the judge shall marry her. However, a woman should not resort to this unless she considers the resulting harms and addresses the issue through dialogue and sincere advice, while striving to be dutiful to her father.

As for marrying someone whose religiosity and character are not approved, in the hope of their guidance, this is a matter fraught with risks. A woman should strive to convince her father to marry her to a man of religiosity and good character, and she should be patient, seek help through supplication and Istikhara (prayer for guidance), and perform many righteous deeds, for a righteous husband is a provision obtained through obedience.
