The answer

If the husband utters the word of divorce to the wife's family, such as saying: "Inform her family that she is divorced," then the divorce takes effect, and it is not a condition to address the wife directly. If he says: "I have annulled the contract," and intends divorce by it, then it takes effect, and it is not necessary for the divorce to be effective for the wife to be addressed directly or for the marriage contract to be taken. If the divorce occurs before consummation with the wife, the husband has the right to reclaim half of the dowry paid, based on the Almighty's saying: "And if you divorce them before you have touched them and you have already specified for them an obligation, then [give] half of what you specified."
