What is the ruling on someone who wakes up for prayer then repeatedly goes back to sleep, thereby missing congregational prayer, and does this act of his fall under the description of hypocrites?

It is not permissible for someone who wakes up after the time for prayer has begun to go back to sleep if they know or strongly suspect that they will not wake up until after the prayer's time has expired, for that entails missing the prayer's prescribed time. Likewise, they should not sleep in a way that causes them to miss congregational prayer in the mosque, even if they know they will pray on time at home, for that entails missing the reward of the congregation. Abstaining from congregational prayer during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him, was a characteristic of the hypocrites, as Ibn Mas'ud said: "And indeed we saw that no one would stay behind from it except a hypocrite known for his hypocrisy." Advice for those who fall short should be given with gentleness and wisdom, along with a fear of falling into the characteristics of the hypocrites.
