Are there three for whom there is no reckoning regarding what they eat?

The verse: {There is no blame upon those who believe and do righteous deeds concerning what they have eaten [in the past] when they abstained [from sins] and believed and did righteous deeds, and then abstained [from sins] and believed, and then abstained [from sins] and did good; and Allah loves those who do good} (Al-Ma'idah: 93) was revealed concerning those Muslims who died before alcohol was forbidden. It is mentioned in the hadiths that the Companions asked about their brethren who died while drinking it, and then the verse was revealed. The verse does not indicate the permissibility of forbidden things for those who fear God and believe. Some have erred in its interpretation, including a group of people in Syria who drank alcohol and claimed it was lawful for them, using this verse as proof. Umar consulted Ali concerning them, and Ali advised that they should be asked to repent. If they repented, they would be flogged eighty lashes; if they did not repent, they would be killed for lying about Allah. So they repented and were flogged.
