Should the husband divorce his first wife or his second, or should he endure the harm resulting from his second marriage?

The Shari'ah legislated polygyny, and it is permissible under certain conditions. If there is no need for polygyny, and it might lead to disputes and family disintegration, then it is better to suffice with one wife, especially if there are children. Limiting oneself to one wife is safer, unless she is not sufficient for the man and does not keep him chaste.

A man marrying a second wife is not an injustice to the first, as long as he acts justly between them. Therefore, it is not permissible for the first wife to seek divorce because of it, nor to demand the divorce of the second. Similarly, it is not permissible for the first wife to oppress or harm the second, as this is forbidden.

The husband should remind his first wife of Allah, encourage her patience, and appreciate her feelings, advising her that polygyny is part of Allah's law. If he cannot reconcile between them, and the problems persist, he may divorce one of the two wives. It is preferable to divorce the second wife to preserve the stability of the first family, while ensuring that the second wife receives her full rights, including her dowry.
