What should a sister do concerning her oath to recite Surat Tabarak every night, which she has not fulfilled for ten years due to extreme fatigue?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

If a Muslim swears an oath to perform an act of obedience, it is recommended for him to fulfill his oath. If he breaks it, he must offer expiation for the oath.

The expiation for an oath is feeding ten poor people, or clothing them, or freeing a slave. If one cannot find these, then it is fasting for three consecutive days.

If a Muslim offers expiation for his oath, this expiation dissolves the oath, making the oath as if it never existed, either by breaking it or by offering the expiation before breaking it.
