Is it permissible to chant the Adhan?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is disliked to chant the adhan in a melodious manner for the purpose of entertainment or to excessively prolong the letters, as long as it does not change the meaning. If it changes the meaning, then it becomes forbidden (haram) and the adhan is invalidated. This is supported by what Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated from Umar ibn Abd al-Aziz, the sayings of Imam Malik and Al-Shafi'i, the consensus of the jurists on the dislike of excessive prolongation, chanting, and melodious rendition in the adhan, and that it becomes forbidden if it distorts the meaning, as well as what the two Shaykhs, Ibn Uthaymeen and Muhammad ibn Ibrahim, said.
