What are the Islamic legal rulings regarding the Adhan, especially with the presence of muezzins who chant it in a manner resembling a mawwal? And is this chanting considered the correct Adhan?
The scholars from various madhhabs have explicitly stated the dislike (karahah) of excessive vocalization (tatreeb) and melodic chanting (talheen) in the , because it contradicts reverence (khushu') and solemnity (haybah), making it resemble singing. However, a melodically chanted Adhan is still valid as long as it does not alter the meaning. It has been narrated from Ibn al-Jawzi and al-Kasani that Ibn 'Umar disliked melodic chanting. In Mawahib al-Jalil, it is mentioned that excessive vocalization (tatreeb) and mournful chanting (tahzeen) in the Adhan are disliked, unless they become excessive, in which case they become prohibited (). Imam Abu Talib al-Makki considered it a form of transgression and aggression.
