Is it permissible to use money saved from a salary earned at an insurance company to pursue further studies?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Working in commercial insurance institutions that are based on significant gharar (excessive uncertainty/risk) corrupts the contract, and is therefore forbidden by Islamic law. As for working in cooperative insurance, which is based on donation and mutual cooperation, it is permissible. If the insurance is forbidden, then it is not permissible to work in it, and one must repent. Any salary received from it should not be benefited from unless one was ignorant of its ruling and has repented. What has been saved from it must be disposed of by spending it on charitable causes with the intention of ridding oneself of the forbidden.
