What was the appearance of the clothing of the Prophet's wives (peace be upon him) during his time?

The attire of the Mothers of the Believers, female Companions, and women of the Salaf was a complete hijab that covered the entire body, in compliance with Allah's command in Surat Al-Ahzab: "O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments." They would cover their faces, revealing only one eye. The Sharia-compliant standard for a Muslim woman's dress is that it must cover her entire body, be thick so as not to reveal the skin, loose so as not to show the body's contours, and not be a garment of fame or adornment.
