The answer

A woman whose husband has died must observe a period of mourning () for four months and ten days, or until she gives birth if she is pregnant. The rules of mourning include five matters:

1. Remaining in the home where her husband died and not leaving it except for urgent necessity. 2. Not wearing decorative clothing. 3. Not adorning herself with any type of jewelry. 4. Not using any kind of perfume or fragrance, except when she purifies herself from menstruation, she may use perfume in the area that has an unpleasant odor. 5. Not adorning her face or eyes with any type of makeup or kohl.

She is permitted to eat all types of permissible food.

Sponsoring an orphan means spending on him, raising him, and taking care of his affairs. She will be rewarded for raising her children and taking care of their affairs.

She is not permitted to leave her home to seek work during the waiting period (iddah) except out of necessity or need. However, after the iddah, she may work if she needs to, provided that the work is suitable for her, she avoids seclusion and mixing with non- men, and her work does not lead to neglecting her duties towards her children and home.

She must cover her face from non-mahram men, and there is no difference in this between a woman in iddah and others. This is a duty that must not be taken lightly.
