What is the ruling on the Adhan and Iqamah in the four schools of thought?

The jurists have agreed that the adhan (call to prayer) is among the manifest rituals of Islam. However, they differed on its ruling, presenting several opinions, including: fard kifayah (a collective obligation) - which is the correct view according to the Hanbalis in urban areas, and the Malikis for the people of a city, and it is also an opinion among the Shafi'is and a narration from Ahmad; and sunnah mu'akkadah (a confirmed sunnah) - which is the preferred view according to the Hanafis and the soundest view according to the Shafi'is; and fard kifayah only for Friday prayer and not others - an opinion among the Shafi'is and Hanbalis. As for the iqamah (call to commence prayer), there are two opinions regarding its ruling: fard kifayah - stated by the Hanbalis and some Shafi'is; and sunnah mu'akkadah - which is the madhhab of the Malikis, the preferred view according to the Shafi'is, and the soundest view according to the Hanafis, with Muhammad stating it is obligatory.
