What is the ruling on abandoning discussion and reasoning with the saying: "There are four whom I do not debate: the ignorant, the quarrelsome, the hypocrite, and the resentful"? And does this saying have a legitimate Islamic basis, or does it contradict the foundations of Islamic dawah (proselytizing)?

Abandoning disputation, contention, and quarrels is commendable in Islamic law, especially in matters of religion and with people of whims and innovations. This is indicated by the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "I guarantee a house in the outskirts of Paradise for whoever abandons contention, even if he is in the right..." The righteous predecessors also warned against this. However, inviting to the truth, enjoining good, and forbidding evil by clarifying the truth, not merely for the sake of disputation or dominance, is required with the best approach, as the Holy Quran guided in His (the Almighty's) saying: "Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good counsel, and dispute with them in the best manner" and His (the Almighty's) saying: "And do not dispute with the People of the Scripture except in the best manner, except for those of them who commit injustice."
