How can one reconcile abandoning argumentation, even when in the right, as stated in the Hadith: "I guarantee a house in the outskirts of Paradise for whoever abandons argumentation, even if he is in the right," with the command to forbid evil and defend the truth?

The blameworthy form of argumentation (miraa') is disputation after the truth has been made clear, and the obstinacy of the disputant, because it is a waste of time and effort and may lead to falling into falsehood. Argumentation (miraa') may also be slandering the words of others to demean them and to show the slanderer's own superiority, which is ugly unless it is for the purpose of clarifying the truth and refuting falsehood. As for scholarly debate (munazara) to manifest the truth, it is permissible. It is also possible that the blameworthy argumentation (miraa') refers to any dispute that leads to contention, discord, and the corruption of hearts.
