What is the ruling on sitting with someone who slanders, then becomes silent, then returns to slandering again after a while?

Whoever hears backbiting must advise the doer to abandon it and warn them of its danger. If they comply, it is permissible to sit with them. Otherwise, one must leave them. This is because, as Imam Al-Nawawi mentioned, listening to backbiting and condoning it is as forbidden as uttering it. The listener must denounce it with their tongue if they do not fear harm, otherwise with their heart and by leaving the gathering. If compelled to stay, they must remember Allah or think about something else to distract themselves from listening. Allah Almighty said: {And when you see those who engage in [offensive] discourse concerning Our verses, then turn away from them until they enter into another conversation. And if Satan should cause you to forget, then do not remain after the remembrance with the wrongdoing people.}
