Does the husband spend the night with the wife from whom he departed, or does he cast lots among his wives upon his return from travel?

If a husband returns from a journey, he should spend the night with the wife whose turn it was before his departure, whether he traveled alone or with one of his wives.

Imam Shafi'i said: "If he allocated a night to a wife, then absented himself, and then returned, he should begin the allocation with the wife whose turn it was next. Similarly, if he was present but preoccupied and unable to spend the night with her, he should resume the allocation just as someone returning from absence would, by beginning the allocation with the one whose night it was."
