What should be done about a mother who shuns and mistreats her daughter, refuses to return her greetings, supports falsehood, and invokes illness upon her?
Filial piety and kindness towards parents are obligatory in all circumstances, and it is not permissible to sever ties with them, no matter what they do. The mother's right to kindness does not fall, even if she is a polytheist, and disobedience to parents is one of the greatest major sins. It is necessary to obey the mother in what is good, but there is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator. Severing ties with a brother without a legitimate reason is a sin. It is obligatory to maintain ties with the mother through greetings, conversation, and visits, and to seek reward for any harm that may come from her, and to advise her not to sever ties with her son or supplicate against him.
