Is it permissible for a mother to compete with her son in a carrom game for a sum of money for the latter, with the son not paying anything if he loses?

It is not permissible to compete for money in such games, even if the money comes from one of the players, because this is forbidden except in competitions that benefit religion or worldly life, such as horse racing, camel racing, or archery, as stated in the hadith: "There is no prize except for a hoof, or a hide, or an arrow." This is because spending money on that which is of no benefit is forbidden, and time must be preserved and not wasted on that which is useless.
