Is it true that Ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab drank wine at a Jew's house, then raped a girl while intoxicated, and she gave birth by him, and that Umar carried out the punishment of 100 lashes on him until he died during the lashing? And what is the response to the insinuation that Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was intoxicated while lashing his son to death, and the insinuation that he was addicted to wine after embracing Islam?

The origin of the story of 'Umar's lashing of his son is found in the books of Sunnah, narrated by Malik, Al-Shafi'i, and Al-Nasa'i, and it is among the soundest solitary narrations (akhbar al-ahad). People differed regarding the son who was lashed, but it has not been established that he died because of the lashing, nor was the amount of lashing specified, though it did not exceed the legal prescribed punishment (al-hadd al-shar'i). It was said that the lashing was for 'Ubaydullah ibn 'Umar, and the story of 'Abd al-Rahman Abu Shahmah occurred in Egypt. It has not been reported that this son raped a girl, nor has it been proven that 'Umar was intoxicated or addicted to alcohol.
