There is a similarity between a conditional oath (ta'liq) and a regular oath (yamin) because both compel a person to do or refrain from doing something. Therefore, Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah and those who agreed with him were of the view that an expiation for an oath (kaffarat al-yamin) is obligatory in the case of a conditional divorce (talaq mu'allaq) if divorce was not intended. As for the expiation for an oath, it is permissible to render it before or after breaking the oath, according to the majority of scholars.
