Is it permissible to bury a husband with his wife in the same grave?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is not permissible to bury more than one deceased person in a single grave except out of necessity, such as an increase in deaths due to an epidemic or war. This is evidenced by the action of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in burying the martyrs of Uhud. The more virtuous deceased should be placed closer to the Qibla. A man should not be buried with a woman unless there is an extreme necessity, and a barrier of earth should be placed between them. Some jurists have held the view that this is merely disliked (makruh) or that it is contrary to what is preferable.
