How can a bearded young man be a good role model in a mixed-gender university, excel in his studies, and prove that bearded individuals are outstanding and not isolated from worldly affairs, while observing Islamic guidelines in his interactions with male and female colleagues?

Congratulations on your commitment to the Sunnah. Do not feel alienated by the path of truth, for those who adhere to the Sunnah in these times are the strangers, and blessed are they. Beware lest this estrangement lead you to agree with people on their mistakes, for that is a tremendous loss.

Adhere to the guidance of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and strive for excellence in your studies to be a good role model. Your conversations with your male colleagues are permissible, so make them a means to invite them to truth and righteousness, for this is one of the greatest acts of nearness to Allah.

If no one responds to your advice, do not despair and repeat the call gently. However, do not associate with those who persist in reprehensible acts, and you must separate from them and shun them so that their bad manners do not transfer to you.

As for men inviting women to Islam, the basic ruling is permissibility with strict Shariah controls. However, experience has shown that whoever undertakes this may not return safely. Therefore, men should refrain from inviting women and leave the matter to their sisters, as this can be a pretext for corruption. It is permissible to speak with women out of necessity or need, while lowering the gaze and not speaking softly or submissively.
