The maintenance of a needy father is, by consensus, obligatory upon his well-off child. This is supported by the hadith: "You and your wealth belong to your father." If the son is in hardship, he must take his father in, feed him, and clothe him from what he himself eats and wears. If he is in debt, the father's maintenance takes precedence over paying the debt, provided that the maintenance is limited to necessities and essential needs, not luxuries.
