Should one sit for the Tashahhud in the second rak'ah after making up missed rak'ahs, or complete the prayer and perform the prostration of forgetfulness (sujud al-sahw)?

The preponderant view is that one who joins the prayer late (masbuq) considers what he caught up with the imam as the beginning of his prayer. Accordingly, if he catches the imam in the second unit (rak'ah) of a four-unit prayer (like Dhuhr prayer), then after the imam says the salaam, he must stand up and perform one unit (rak'ah) in which he recites Al-Fatiha and a surah (definition). Then he sits for the first tashahhud (definition). After that, he performs two more units (rak'ahs) with Al-Fatiha only. If he forgets the first tashahhud in its proper place, he must perform the prostrations of forgetfulness (sujud (definition) as-sahw). It is best to hasten to attend congregational prayer in the mosque.
