What is the religious ruling on avoiding family gatherings that involve mixing of genders (ikhtilat), immodest display (tabarruj), and handshaking between men and women, and is this avoidance considered disobedience to parents ( 'uquq al-walidayn) if they become angry?

Parents are not permitted to prevent their children from the path of Allah, nor to demand from them acts that involve disobedience to Him, such as immodest display (tabarruj) or unlawful mixing (ikhtilat). It is not permissible to obey them in such matters, for there is no obedience to a creature in disobedience to the Creator. Nevertheless, kindness should be shown in dealing with parents, and they should be advised with wisdom and good counsel.
