The ruler is entrusted with the matter of choosing his successors. Upon him are determined the general tasks, such as preserving the religion, implementing rulings, and selecting trustworthy individuals. Knowledge is a fundamental condition for the Grand Imamate. If the ruler is not knowledgeable, he must refer to the people of knowledge. The appointments issued by the ruler are divided into four categories, some of which relate to general or specific affairs.
