The answer

The methods of sending blessings upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, vary, and the best of them is what was narrated in the of Abu Humayd As-Sa'idi, may Allah be pleased with him: "O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad, his wives, and his offspring, as You sent Your blessings upon the family of Ibrahim, and bless Muhammad, his wives, and his offspring, as You blessed the family of Ibrahim. Verily, You are Most Praiseworthy, Most Glorious."

As for sending blessings upon the Companions and others, scholars have differed on this. Some permitted sending blessings upon the family of Muhammad, which includes them, while others disliked singling out anyone other than prophets for blessings, such as Malik, Abu Hanifa, Ibn Abbas, and the companions of Ash-Shafi'i. A group of scholars, however, held the view that it is permissible to send blessings independently upon those other than the Prophet.
