What are the rational or textual proofs for the punishment of stoning (rajm)?

The Book of Allah (the Qur’an) and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace be upon him) indicate the prescribed punishment of stoning (rajm) for the married fornicator (al-zani al-muhsan). The Companions unanimously agreed upon it. It was revealed in the Qur’an, but its recitation was abrogated while its ruling remained, as was reported from Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace be upon him) carried out stoning, and the Rightly Guided Caliphs after him also carried it out. Allah has lightened the punishment for the unmarried person (al-bikr) and intensified it for the married person (al-muhsan) because the Sharia has opened doors of lawful means for the married person, so he has no excuse for committing adultery. Therefore, he is punished with stoning due to the corruption of lineage and the threat to society that it entails.
