What is the ruling on working in cleaning, feeding, and petting common dogs for a family that owns them? Does this invalidate one's prayer, and does it mean the Muslim is in a permanent state of impurity? What is the ideal solution for such a situation? What is the expiation required if what one is doing is considered wrong? And what alternative is available if no other work is found?

It appears that the aforementioned dogs are not permissible to keep, and therefore, it is not permissible to care for them, as this would be assisting in sin. However, some actions are permissible, such as feeding them. As for cleaning and petting them, which requires touching them, this is not permissible due to the impurity of dogs and the danger of touching them to human health. The majority of scholars have held that a dog is impure in all its parts. The Hanafis have held that its saliva is impure but its body is pure. The Malikis have held that both its saliva and body are pure. According to the majority opinion, anything touched by a dog, whether clothing or body, by its saliva or wet body, must be washed seven times, one of which is with earth. The prayer of one who has purified himself in the prescribed manner is valid, and there is no basis for his prayer being invalid or for him remaining in a state of impurity. There is no expiation for what he has done other than repentance and seeking forgiveness. He must seek lawful employment and advise those who keep dogs that it is not permissible.
