What is the ruling on Mawlids? And what is Imam Malik's opinion of the people of Mawlids?

The celebration of the Mawlid (Prophet's birthday) is an innovation that did not exist during the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, nor his companions. Rather, it originated during the Fatimid era. Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, was a strong opponent of innovations, and among his sayings is: "Whoever innovates a bid'ah (innovation) in Islam and considers it good, has claimed that Muhammad betrayed the message," citing the verse: "This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you." He also said: "Whatever was not part of the religion then, will not be part of the religion today." This is a refutation of all supposedly good innovations, including the Mawlid.
