Is it permissible to fold one's trousers to avoid their trailing during prayer, knowing the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "I have been commanded to prostrate on seven [limbs], and not to tuck up a garment or hair"?

What is known from the wording of the Hadith is: "Nor shall I tuck up a garment or hair," or "Nor shall I restrain."

The prohibition of isbal (letting one's garment hang below the ankles) is general, applying both inside and outside of prayer. If a worshiper raises his garment above the limit of isbal, then he does not fall under the prohibition of tucking up the garment during prayer, because he is commanded to raise the garment.

As some scholars have stated, tucking up the garment in prayer is disliked if it is without need; but if there is a need, then there is no dislike.
