The incident involving al-Hajjaj occurred during the caliphate of Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan in the year 73 AH. Al-Hajjaj besieged Mecca and erected catapults around it, which he used to bombard its inhabitants, killing a large number of them. The Kaaba was also struck by the bombardment. However, the intention of the people of Sham was not to insult the Kaaba, but rather to fight the people of Mecca and Ibn al-Zubayr.
