What is the ruling on one who consumed a trust? Is repentance alone sufficient, or must it be accompanied by the return of the trust?

Allah commanded the preservation and fulfillment of trusts, and the Prophet warned against their neglect. Consuming a trust is among the forbidden acts that necessitate sincere repentance. Repentance is not complete except by fully returning the trust to its owner.
