Is a son considered disobedient if he places his elderly father, who is in need of intensive care, in a nursing home due to his inability to provide the necessary care for him at home and at work?

Filial piety and kindness towards one's parents, especially in their old age, are among the greatest duties and acts of devotion. The fundamental principle is that parents at this age should be cared for by their children, not placed in nursing homes. This is indicated by the words of Allah Almighty: "And your Lord has decreed that you shall not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment. Whether one or both of them reach old age [while] with you, say not to them [a word of] disrespect, nor repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, 'My Lord, have mercy upon them as they nurtured me when I was small.'"

If it is difficult for your father to reside with you in your home, and there are no siblings to care for him, then you should move to reside with him in his place. If that also proves difficult, then hire someone to care for him in his home; this is preferable to a nursing home.

If the father willingly agrees to reside in a nursing home without neglect from his children, there is no harm in that, provided that continuous monitoring and material and moral care are maintained for him.
