It is the wife’s right to reside in a suitable, independent dwelling. She is not obliged to accept living with the husband’s family, unless the husband stipulated this to her and she agreed to it. In that case, she would not have the right to demand a separate dwelling unless she is harmed by living with the husband’s family. If the wife is harmed by living with the husband’s mother, then the husband must provide her with an independent dwelling within his mother’s house, such that she has a room with its amenities. If the wife refuses to return without a valid excuse, she is considered disobedient (nashiz) and her maintenance (nafaqa) is forfeited.
