How can I atone for the oaths I broke because of resisting evil whispers, knowing that I do not know their number?

If an oath is repeatedly sworn to ignore intrusive thoughts (waswasah), but they return, a single expiation (kaffarah (definition)) is required according to the majority of scholars, provided that the breaking of the oath occurs only after all the oaths have been sworn. However, if the oaths are separate and are broken intermittently, then an expiation is required for each oath. If the number is unknown, expiations should be paid based on what is most likely to clear one's conscience, with caution. If it is merely a doubt or intrusive thought regarding the original oath itself, then no expiation is required. It is advised not to hasten to swear oaths and to resist intrusive thoughts through supplication (du'a).
