What is the ruling on destroying commemorative photos and videos when parents object?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

"Visual and photographic imaging differ in their permissibility and lawfulness, unless viewing them is forbidden. As for keeping pictures for memory, Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) issued a fatwa prohibiting it. It is forbidden to keep pictures for memory unless there is a necessity. Therefore, it is not permissible to obey parents in keeping them, and they must be destroyed gently and wisely. For whoever seeks Allah's pleasure, even if it displeases people, Allah will be pleased with him and make people pleased with him."
