What is the interpretation of the noble verse: "But they will never wish for it, ever," even though some disbelievers wish for death?

The verse is not general to disbelievers; rather, it addresses the Jews contemporary with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who claimed that Paradise was exclusively theirs. Allah challenged them to wish for death if they were truthful, whereupon He informed that they "will never wish for it, ever."

Ibn al-Qayyim clarified that their not wishing for death was a miracle for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and a proof of the truthfulness of his prophethood, because they knew that they were lying in their claim that Paradise was exclusively theirs, and that if they were to wish for it, it would lead them to the Fire.
