He must protect them from the fire of Hell. Some fathers have sacrificed their children's upbringing by focusing on wealth, and they have regretted it. If a father's travel away from his family harms them, then it is forbidden (). If it does not harm them but causes them pain, and there is a great benefit in the travel, such as seeking knowledge, then there is no objection. Otherwise, his staying with them is better. He should consult a scholar about his situation and what is best for him.
