The statement in question is attributed to Fudayl ibn Iyad. Ibn Asakir mentioned it in Tarikh Dimashq with the wording: "Indeed, I disobey Allah, and I recognize that from the disposition of my donkey and my servant." Ibn Kathir attributed it to Fudayl in Al-Bidaya wa an-Nihaya with the wording: "Indeed, I disobey Allah, and I recognize that in the disposition of my donkey, my servant, my wife, and the mouse of my house." It was also attributed to him by Abu Nu'aym in Al-Hilya and Ibn Al-Jawzi in Sifat al-Safwa.
