If someone insulted me or wronged me, is it permissible for me to hit him?

If someone wrongs you by cursing, it is permissible for you to retaliate in kind without exceeding the limit, for Allah Almighty says: "And if you punish [an enemy], then punish with an equivalent of that with which you were afflicted." Patience and forgiveness are better for the wronged, for Allah Almighty says: "But if you are patient - it is better for those who are patient." It is not permissible to hit someone who cursed you, because hitting is more severe than cursing.
