How can one reconcile the existence of free will for humans and jinn with the prophetic traditions which indicate that God has predetermined one's destiny and deeds, such as whether one is wretched or blessed, rich or poor, as stated in the Hadith of Anas ibn Malik and in His (the Almighty's) saying: "And if Allah had willed, He could have made you one nation, but He sends astray whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And you will surely be questioned about what you used to do"?

The accountable individual possesses will and choice, which make him responsible for his actions, and he is recompensed for them with good or evil. Allah’s knowledge of what the servant will do is written with Him, but this does not compel the servant to do anything. Allah’s guidance is of two types: general guidance for indication and clarification, and specific guidance for believers, involving divine enabling and assistance. Allah's leading astray is His leaving the servant to his own devices, while divine enabling is a grace from Him, and abandonment is justice from Him. Allah knows best who deserves His grace, and the servant does not know what has been decreed for him, so he must tread the path of guidance.
