The general rule is that the pilgrim must cast the pebbles himself, and deputization is not permissible except for a valid excuse such as illness or imprisonment. The pilgrims' desire to hasten the circumambulation to avoid crowds is not a valid excuse permitting deputization. The farewell circumambulation is not sufficient for someone unable to cast the pebbles until his proxy has cast them on his behalf.
