What is the ruling on seeking blessings from the righteous?

Seeking blessings from righteous people is of two types: The first is seeking blessings through their supplications, which is permissible, provided one knows their righteousness and piety and that they do not become deluded by it. The second is seeking blessings through their relics, such as their clothes and the like, which is a forbidden innovation (bid'ah).
