What are the limits of tolerance, and is it permissible to be tolerant in all matters?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Lexically, tolerance means generosity and bounty. It is the act of forgiving an offender and an oppressor. This forgiveness is permissible without limits; indeed, it is often the preferred course of action in many situations. This is exemplified in the verse: "The recompense for an evil deed is an evil deed of similar proportion; but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation - his reward is due from Allah. Indeed, He does not like wrongdoers." However, in some cases, not forgiving or tolerating might be better.
