What is the ruling on men clapping in weddings and religious ceremonies?

Some scholars disliked and prohibited men from clapping, considering it vain amusement or an imitation of the pre-Islamic pagans' worship at the Kaaba, for 'muka' (whistling) and 'tasdiya' (clapping) were their practices. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, also forbade it for men, saying: "Clapping is only for women." A man can express his feelings by saying 'Allahu Akbar' (God is Greatest).
